The first batch of Taiwan athletes and officials departed yesterday for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, which open Sept. 15.
Athletes in the first batch included 15 swimmers, seven badminton players, five weightlifters, two gymnasts, eight judo fighters, four archers and two shooters.
The staff members included team leader Chuang Tsun-tze and Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee Secretary-General Tang Ming hsin.
The second batch, including Huang Ta-chou, chairman of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, along with divers, track and field competitors, cyclists, tennis and table tennis players, is expected to leave Sept. 12.
Hsu Yi-hsiung, chairman of the National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under the Executive Yuan, and Education Minister Tseng Chih-lang are scheduled to leave for Sydney on Sept. 13 and Sept. 14, respectively.
ROC table tennis aces Chen Chin and Hsu Jung-chan will leave Sept. 17, while the taekwondo team will leave Sept. 19.
Taiwan is sending a total of 111 people, including 58 athletes, to the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
