An Italian third division player who fell into a coma after being punched by an opponent was in a stable condition on Monday following surgery, doctors said.

Modena midfielder Francesco Bertolotti hit the floor of a dressing room on Sunday after being punched following a match won 1-0 by Como.

Como player Massimiliano Ferrigno, 36, was questioned by police and told he was being investigated for “grievous bodily harm”. His lawyer said Ferrigno was shocked by what had happened.

Surgeons at the Sant’Anna hospital in Lecco said the operation to reduce two blood clots in Bertolotti’s head had gone well. Doctors are due to release a medical bulletin on his condition at 1300 GMT.

Bertolotti is 33 and was born in Blackburn, England. Sergio Campani, president of Italy’s Footballers’ Association (AIC), called the incident an outrage and said the perpetrator should be dealt with severely.

“What happened at Como is beyond anyone’s imagination, it enters into pure criminality,” he said.
