Boca Juniors hit by injuries and suspensions

Boca Juniors have been hit by a spate of injuries and suspensions as they attempt to hold off a late challenge from River Plate in the Argentine Apertura title race.

Defender Sebastian Battaglia has been sidelined for between six to eight months after rupturing left knee ligaments during Wednesday’s 3 0 defeat by Independiente. Playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme is doubtful for Sunday’s visit to Chacarita Juniors with a knee injury while Guillmero Barros Schelotto and Fernando Pandolfi are also out.

Anibal Mattelan and Antonio Barijho have been suspended after being sent off on Wednesday.

World club champions Boca lost their 16 match unbeaten record at Independiente and saw their lead over defending champions River Plate cut to three points. Both teams have two games to play.
