French Open hero Sebastien Grosjean made an early exit from the Halle tournament when he lost 7-5, 7-5 to fellow Frenchman Fabrice Santoro in a second round match on Thursday.
Third seed Grosjean, who reached the last four on the Paris clay after an impressive victory over Andre Agassi in the quarter-finals, had his chances but Santoro showed more composure when it mattered.
Santoro now plays German Lars Burgsmueller, who fought back from one set down to beat France’s Jerome Golmard 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Thomas Johansson, the seventh seed, also advanced to the quarter-finals of the grasscourt event by beating Magnus Larsson 7-5 7-5 in a tight, all-Swedish second round match.
Johansson goes on to meet either local favourite Nicolas Kiefer or another of his fellow Swedes, Jonas Bjorkman.
