The Chinese Taipei junior league baseball team yesterday won the right to represent the Asian Pacific region to vie for the championship of the Pony League in the U.S. Pony Baseball Tournament.
The Chinese Taipei team, which is made up of Chungshan Junior School students from Taichung City, defeated the South Korean team 6-2 in the final of the Asia-Pacific Junior Baseball Championship held in Hokkaido. The win left the team undefeated among the participating nations of South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.
The Chinese Taipei team trounced the hosts, Sapporo, 11-1 Aug. 4 and the Japan’s national team 4-2 Aug. 5 at the competition held at the Sapporo Mapu Stadium in Hokkaido, Japan.
This was the second time that the Chinese Taipei team has won the right to represent the Asian-Pacific region in the U.S. Pony Baseball Tournament. The Chinese Taipei team captured the title at the finals held in the United States last year.
The organizing committee Asian-Pacific event has subsidized the Chinese Taipei team with US$2,000 to help it compete in the United States.
