World and Olympic champion Grant Hackett broke the 1500 meter freestyle world record at the Australian short course swimming championships here Tuesday night. Hackett clocked 14 minutes 10.10 seconds taking 9.45 seconds off the old mark in beating Britain’s Graeme Smith (1407.28) and fellow Australian Craig Stevens (14.50.81). Hackett, who broke the world long course 1500m record on July 29 at the Fukuoka world championships, previously held the old short course world record of 1409.55 set here on September 27, 1998. It was Hackett’s second world record for the short course meet having eradicated Kieren Perkins’ name from the record books by setting a new world mark over 800m freestyle.
