Ireland’s Robbie Keane and Norwegian Eirik Bakke scored a goal each to give Leeds United a 2-1 victory on Tuesday over the Bangkok XI team comprising veterans and rising stars of Thailand.
The win capped a successful run for Leeds United under manager Terry Venables during its Asia-Pacific tour. Before coming to Bangkok, the English Premier League squad had routed Green Bay FC 5-1 in China and beaten Colo Colo of Chile 1-0 in Australia.
Playing under a steady shower in Bangkok’s Rajamangala National Stadium, both teams started aggressively and took turns to attack each other’s defense.
After 24 minutes, the British team took a 1-0 lead as Bakke blasted a right foot shot from the 40 yard (meter) line. It widened the gap 13 minutes later after Harry Kewell struggled his way through the Thai defense before delivering a pass to star striker Keane, who jabbed it home.
The home side reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute with Kiartisak Senamuang firing a shot from the front of the goal.
