The Taipei District Court yesterday ordered the arrest of seven police officers on corruption charges. The officers from five different units in Taipei County are suspected of regularly taking bribes from construction sites, according to the court. Agents from the Justice Ministry Investigation Bureau on Tuesday raided five police stations in Taipei County and took the seven officers into questioning. More officers were involved in the case, the United Evening News cited investigators as saying.
According to the investigators, the police officers would set up checkpoints near construction sites to crack down on illegally mined gravel. To avoid heavy fines, constructors would bribe the officers, the investigators alleged. A gravel supplier is said to have bribed police with NT$1 million each month, the United Evening News said.
