East Asian literature int’l seminar begins


An international seminar on East Asian literature and folk culture begins today at the National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Southern Tainan City, an NCKU spokesman said Thursday.

The two-day seminar, organized by NCKU’s Department of Chinese Literature, will feature experts and academics from eight countries, including Russia and the United States, who will present 24 research papers.

The seminar will also exhibit more than 300 Taoist books belonging to the Pao Tai Temple in Chiayi County. These books, with a history of more than 100 years, are transcriptions of temple founder Chan Nien’s teaching.

The spokesman said Taiwan society’s changes,such as the appearance of sugar factories,radio,asphalt roads and the telephone, are also recorded in the books.
