President Chen Shui-bian vowed yesterday that the government will end the long-term flooding problem in the southern county of Pingtung, adding that resolve is the key to success. Chen made the remarks during an inspection tour of the southern county’s Tungkang township, which was heavily flooded by recent torrential rain.
The township is always flooded when the daily precipitation exceeds 400 mm due to its location at the convergence of three rivers, Magistrate Tsao Chi hung told Chen at a briefing. Nevertheless, a flood diversion project and two pumping stations could prevent flooding from occurring again, Tsao said, calling for central government subsidies.
Chen promised to offer subsidies to facilitate an early start of the flood-fighting projects.
