Kidnappers get caught up in presidential motorcade

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Four Taiwanese gangsters who kidnapped a woman in the southern county of Tainan were wretched enough to bump into the touring motorcade of President Chen Shui-bian, local media reported Sunday.

The unidentified female victim shouted for help when the presidential motorcade passed by the vehicle of her kidnappers, cable news network TVBS reported.

Security agents assigned to protect Chen managed to stop the vehicle following a chase of more than 20 kilometers, the station quoted special-squad team leader Lei Ping-hua as saying. The kidnappers finally surrendered, and the agents found two pistols and 20 rounds of bullets with the suspects after saving the woman, Lei said.
