TAIPEI, Taiwan — The Joint Investigation Center, a task force under direct command of the Ministry of National Defense, was deactivated yesterday. “With the approval of the minister, the task force was disbanded right away,” an MND statement said

Set up as a counterespionage unit, the Joint Investigation Center has been charged with bugging lawmakers, including Wang Jin-pyng, president of the Legislative Yuan. The MND denied the allegations.

“But,” the statement said, “the time came to disband the task force, and all the necessary investigation will be conducted by T/O institutions.” T/O stands for Table of Organization. A task force isn’t a T/O institution. The MND has a counterintelligence department.
