TAIPEI, Taiwan — The 2008 Hsinchu International Glass Art Festival is scheduled to run from Feb. 16 through April 20 next year, according to a decision reached yesterday at a preparatory meeting of the Hsinchu city government.

Hsinchu Mayor Lin Jung-tser told reporters that the theme of the festival will be “Mermaids Touring the Glass Fairyland.”

Lin said a “glass art street” in a former air force dependents’ village near the Hsinchu Glass Art Museum in Hsinchu Park will remain open from Feb. 2 to May 1.

He added that in addition to exhibitions of works by renowned glass artists in Taiwan, there will be music and dance performances to entertain visitors.

Hsinchu, which has dubbed itself the “city of culture and science,” has organized the biennial event since 1995. The 2006 festival attracted more than 410,000 visitors
