Sri Lanka rebels say 11 government troops killed

COLOMBO — Separatist rebels said they killed 11 government troops and wounded 20 during clashes in northern Sri Lanka on Monday. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said they killed eight soldiers and wounded 20 while beating back the fresh attempt by the army to break through rebel defense lines in Jaffna.

However, the defence ministry dismissed the rebel claims, saying two soldiers had died, one was missing and 14 were injured in the Jaffna fighting. Another three soldiers were killed after stepping on trapped mines.
