VP follows suit, donates NT$200,000 for quake relief

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Vice President Annette Lu donated NT$200,000 from her private funds Monday toward earthquake relief in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan.

A magnitude 7.9 temblor struck the region last Monday, killing over 32,000 people and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. More than 100,000 people remain unaccounted for, presumably buried under the rubble of collapsed structures.

At a news conference, Lu made the donation to be paid into a special bank account set up by the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) for quake relief efforts in Sichuan.

The donation was accepted by Executive Yuan Secretary-General Chen Chin-jun on behalf of Premier Chang Chun-hsiung.

The vice president said the money was not taken from her special allowance fund or government funds meant for public affairs, but rather was a private donation meant to show her sympathy and concern for the quake victims in China.
