Japanese grandma held over prostitution ring

TOKYO — A 70-year-old Japanese grandmother was arrested for allegedly helping to run a prostitution ring, police said Thursday. Toshiko Uchida was arrested along with three men on charges of managing a prostitution club since January 2006 in Tokyo, police said.

They reportedly earned some 100 million yen (US$954,000) by charging up to 35,000 yen per customer. Uchida called herself “Maria”, police said. She reportedly told police that she would never do anything evil because she was “Virgin Maria.”
