HUALIEN, Taiwan — The blood bank in Hualien is calling on donors to come forward to help ease blood shortages in the eastern county. Last week, the county’s hospitals and clinics were in need of over 900 bags of blood, but only 377 were available, the bank said. Its blood donation promotion activities last weekend were canceled because of Typhoon Sinlaku. Meanwhile, Taiwan Lottery Co. (TLC) has teamed up with the Taiwan Blood Foundation to launch a blood donation drive in major cities on the island before Sept. 28. The company yesterday offered two scratch lotto tickets for each donor who rolled up their sleeves and donated 250 cc of their blood to needy compatriots in the cities of Taipei and Taichung.

Four tickets were given to those who donated 500 cc each. There were also raffles held for blood donors as extra prize. The same campaign will continue to be held in two other major cities — Hsinchu in northern Taiwan and Tainan City in the south. Executives of Taiwan Lottery urged healthy people to regularly give to their local blood donation centers or visit the Web site to find out of locations of donation centers.
