Chinese poachers nabbed off Kinmen in crackdown

KINMEN, Taiwan — Kinmen-based coast guard patrol ships launched a crackdown on intruding Chinese fishing boats in waters off Taiwan-controlled island of Kinmen yesterday, nabbing four Chinese vessels and 16 people.

During the crackdown — part of the “Ching Hai” campaign aimed at preventing poaching by Chinese fishing boats in Taiwan’s territorial waters and better protecting Taiwan’s fishery resources — 15 other Chinese fishing boats were also chased out of Kinmen waters, the Kinmen operations of the Cabinet level Coast Guard Administration said. In collaboration with the Kinmen county government and the Kinmen Fishermen’s Association, the Kinmen coast guard also confiscated some 100 items of fishing gear, including around 3,000 meters of fishing nets, the coast guard said.
