3,000 British computer jobs to be eliminated

LONDON — More than 3,000 computer jobs will be lost over the next two years, including jobs in British government ministries, the Public and Services Commercial Union said Wednesday. The union, Britain’s largest, says the cuts will come as a result of a takeover of Electronic Data Systems Corp. by Hewlett-Packard Co.

A statement from Hewlett-Packard said that as many as 3,378 positions could be affected, but “where possible we will deploy impacted individuals.” The union said EDS has contracts with government departments such as the Ministry of Defense and the Department for Work and Pensions.
