Most Portuguese expect approval of budget: poll

LISBON — Most Portuguese expect parliament to approve tough new austerity measures including wage cuts for civil servants, even though they do not like the plan announced by the minority Socialist government, a poll showed on Saturday. The survey by pollsters Eurosondagem, the first after Wednesday’s announcement of the measures aimed at reducing the budget deficit, also showed the ruling Socialists losing popularity and the main opposition party regaining the lead. The Socialist Party had 33 percent of voting intentions, down from 36 percent in the previous Eurosondagem poll in early September, while the center-right Social Democrats (PSD) also dipped, to 35 percent from 35.8 percent.
