Badminton player wins silver in Indonesian open


TAIPEI, Taiwan — Taiwan’s Cheng Shao-chieh lost to local teenager Ratchanok Inthanon (21-12, 19-21, 21-16) in the women’s singles final of the Indonesian Open Badminton Grand Prix Gold 2010 yesterday, winning herself a silver medal.

Fourth seed Cheng took a 6-5 lead at the beginning of the first set before the 15 year-old Indonesian rallied for a comfortable win at 21-12.

Cheng then won the hard-fought, see-saw second set with a score of 21-19 to level the match.

The Taiwanese was as much as seven points behind her local opponent at 12-5 in the third set. She narrowed the gap to 19-16 in her final effort, but still had to settle for silver.

Cheng advanced to the final after eliminating Singaporean Beiwin Zhang (21-9, 21-13) in the semifinals and Jiayuan Chen, also of Singapore, (21-8, 21-14) in the quarterfinals of the event held Oct. 12-17 in Samarinda, the provincial capital of East Kalimantan.
