TAIPEI, Taiwan — Bring 1,000 friends to Taitung County and receive NT$30,000 for your efforts!

As a way to generate interest and boost tourism in the area, Taitung County Magistrate Justin Huang yesterday announced that the county government will give the reward to tour groups to Taitung with over 1,000 travelers who stay at least one night, eat two meals and visit three scenic sites. Taitung authorities yesterday brought up the arduous task of rebuilding local tourism after the recent collapse of the Suao-Hualien (Suhua) Highway at a conference officiated by Premier Wu Den-yih.

Huang proposed at the meeting to use the NT$10 million in government-reserved funds for his plan — for members of the travel industry to rally 1,000 visitors to come to Taitung between November 1 and 30 and receive NT$30,000 in rewards; tourists exceeding that number will bring in even more money. Visitors are required to stay at least one night, eat two meals and visit at least three scenic spots in the region. Huang’s goal is to attract at least 300,000 tourists to Taitung a month in order to survive the blow caused by the collapsed highway.
