National triathlon attracts over 300 participants

KAOHSIUNG — The 7th annual national triathlon was held in the southern county of Kaohsiung yesterday, attracting more than 300 competitors.

The triathlon, consisting of boat racing, cycling and running, included two categories — the Elite Challenge and a Novice section. Participants in the elite category had to race a 53.5-kilometer course, while the novice race was 32.52 km.

Wei Chen-chan took gold in the elite category, while Tseng Chun-wei took gold in the novice category.

Of particular note was Wang Chien-yu, who came fourth in the female novice category, aged just 12.

Wang, who she was giving the sport a try for the first time, said that “it is new to me, but I will enter other junior triathlons in the future.”

The event used to take place in Liugui Township in Kaohsiung County, famous for its river rafting in the Laonong River, but the rafting section this year was replaced with an inflatable boat race on the Agongdian Reservoir because of damage to the river by Typhoon Morakot last August.
