Trains set for new integrated charging service

TAIPEI, Taiwan — The Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) said yesterday that it will introduce an integrated charging system from Jan. 1, 2011 for the convenience of passengers enrolled in four different e-ticket plans.

Passengers holding e-cards issued by EasyCard Corp., Far Eastern Electronic Toll Collection Co., Taiwan Smart Card Co., or Kaohsiung Rapid Transit System will all be able to use the new service, according to the TRA.

The current charging system requires passengers to use designated cards on different sections of the railway system. For example, while the Easycard system is used in the greater Taipei area, Taiwan Smart Cards are required for e-charging outside that region.

The new system will be installed in stations on two routes — one between Taipei County’s Rueifang Station and Hsinchu Station, the other between Tainan County’s Zhongzhou Station and the Southern Taiwan Science Park Station.
