Taiwan condemns attack on South Korea by North

TAIPEI, Taiwan — President Ma Ying-jeou denounced North Korea yesterday over the artillery attack launched a day earlier against South Korea that resulted in at least two deaths.

“We condemn North Korea,” Ma said when asked to comment on the attack during a visit to the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei, where he paid respect to the late founder of the ruling Kuomintang to mark the party’s 116th anniversary.

North Korea shelled the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong near their disputed western border Tuesday, after Seoul ignored Pyongyang’s demand that it stop military drills in the area.
