Lai Ching-te of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate for the Tainan mayoral seat has declared himself winner on Saturday. He has won around 60 percent of the votes with 62 percent of polls reported.
Lai won a landslide victory against the ruling Kuomintang’s Kuo Tien-tsai as widely expected.
During his acceptance speech, he said that it is his mission to build Tainan as a major metropolis and restore it to its historical glory. To achieve these goals, he would set aside political differences and seek out experts from all parties.
Lai was a medical doctor before he decided to join the DPP to begin his political career. He has served as a legislator for the DPP four times since 1999.
Official results are expected later Saturday.
