Frigid weather expected during New Year holiday

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A cold front that began to envelop Taiwan late yesterday will send temperatures plummeting to single digit in the northern areas of Taiwan throughout the weekend, the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said yesterday.

The CWB had issued a low temperature warning earlier in day, saying that the mercury would continue to drop overnight in central and northern Taiwan. The greater Taipei area could expect daytime highs of 12 degrees Celsius on Friday, but by nighttime temperatures are likely to fall sharply to lows of between 5 and 7 degrees, the bureau warned. Other areas of Taiwan could also expect very cold weather, the CWB said. In Yilan in the east, Taichung in the central region and Tainan in the south temperatures are expected to fall Friday night to lows of 7, 6, and 10 degrees Celsius, respectively, according to the bureau.

The cold front will begin to weaken by Sunday, it forecast.
