Italy Premier Silvio Berlusconi vows to boost growth to 4% within 5 years

ROME–Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi says he wants to boost Italy’s growth from 3 percent to 4 percent of GDP in five years. Berlusconi told an interview on state television’s main evening broadcast that the economy needs a “shock” to return to growth — and he pledged that his plan would bring “perhaps one of the biggest shocks in Italian history.” Berlusconi said he would seek to relieve entrepreneurs of bureaucracy with a proposal to allow business owners to take any action that is not expressly prohibited. As it stands, Berlusconi said entrepreneurs are required to obtain “countless permits” to do business. Berlusconi, who is embroiled in an underage prostitution scandal, told TG1 Wednesday evening that he is “serene” despite what he called “unprecedented attacks against me.”
