HK boy hurt after falling into washing machine

HONG KONG — A 16-month-old boy was seriously ill in hospital Wednesday after falling head first into a top-loading washing machine as his mother did housework in their Hong Kong home, police said. The boy apparently climbed on a clothes basket to look into the machine as it went through a washing cycle before falling in and spent about a minute head first in the water, they said.

He was found inside the machine by his mother, 26, Tuesday afternoon and rushed to hospital where he was being treated in an intensive care unit, a police spokesman said.

The washing machine involved in the accident was a top-loading type that continues to operate even when the lid is open, according to reports of the accident in Hong Kong newspapers Wednesday.
