A Hualien County man who was found dead after hanging himself Sunday confessed in suicide note that he had murdered his ex-wife and subsequently abandoned her corpse near a riverbank in Kuangfu Township.

The Fenglin District Police found the woman’s body yesterday morning and are currently investigating the cause of death. The deceased husband, surnamed Hsu, was found by his son at 5 p.m. Sunday. He had left a suicide not detailing the location of his former wife’s body; the son called the police immediately after reading it. The police deployed investigators on a large-scale search of the area at 10 p.m. Sunday night. They did not locate the woman’s body until yesterday morning. According to police reports, the body of the Hualien woman, surnamed Tsai, showed signs of head trauma that caused excessive bleeding, which could have been the fatal blow. A pending autopsy will determine the exact cause of death, police said. The police surmise that Hsu killed his ex-wife Sunday night, abandoned her body, and then proceeded to go to the roof of his building and hang himself.

Although the couple had gotten divorced, they continued to live in different floors of the same building. Neighbors described the couple as constantly quarreling, and said Tsai was much friendlier with people in the building than Hsu. Hsu had reportedly left suicide notes for all three of his children, although none appeared to offer a motive for killing their mother. Judging from the condition of Tsai’s body, police estimated that Hsu had killed her between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Sunday.
