Chan-Shuko duo take out Malaysia Open top seeds

TAIPEI–Taiwan’s Chan Chin-wei and partner Shuko Aoyama of Japan knocked out the top seeds in the opening round of the Malaysian Open doubles yesterday, the first time Chan has won a match in an elite WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour event this year.

The unheralded Chan, ranked 156th in doubles, joined with Aoyama to upend Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands and Tatjana Malek of Germany 6-3, 6-4 in 69 minutes and advance to the tournament’s quarterfinals against Russians Elena Bovina and Nina Bratchikova.

The winning duo served well, with a first-serve percentage of 74 percent, and converted five of seven break points to keep their opponents under pressure.

The win represented a breakthrough for the 26-year-old veteran from Taiwan, who now plays mostly lower tier ITF events because her singles ranking has fallen to 456, from a career best 152 in October 2006.
