Reservists told to prepare to rough it during exercise

In a departure from previous exercises, more than 4,800 reservists called up by the Reserved Command under the Ministry of National Defense were reminded that they will be bivouacked in the wild for a few days in an exercise that starts today. The Reserved Command will provide enough underwear for the reservists, who are expected to “get dirty.” They can also bring their own disposable underwear.

The reservists were also told in a reminder, called “A Letter to the Reservist,” to expect round-the-clock maneuvers and drills in the exercise codenamed Tung-hsin 23 (同心23號). The reminder also tells the reservists to report on-time to designated locations in Yilan, New Taipei City, Taichung and Chiayi, where they will be trained in urban warfare, beachhead operations, defense in rugged terrain and emergency operations with support from vehicles and airplanes.

In the past, officers with the command told reservists by telephone what to expect in the exercises.
