The China Post–Sean Lien (連勝文) voiced support for incumbent President Ma Ying-jeou’s re-election campaign, yesterday, commending Ma for reviving Taiwan’s economy.
While participating in the Kuomintang’s (KMT) Central Standing Committee, Lien said that he is in favor of Ma serving as president again, “because so doing would benefit Taiwan,” he said.
The son of KMT Honorary Chairman Lien Chan (連戰), Lien survived after being shot and injured while stumping for a ruling KMT candidate in Taipei County last November. He has made few public appearances since his recovery, and only recently resumed participation in politics.
According to Lien, he has always been in support of Ma. Believing that the Ma administration had cooperated well with the private sector in reviving Taiwan’s economy, Lien said that from both the viewpoint of a KMT member and a voter concerned about economy, Ma is a figure who can provide a positive impact for the nation.
When questioned if his father was against him making public appearances in support of Ma, Lien said that “there is nothing to worry about at Ma’s campaign headquarters.” To avoid worrying his family, however, he would try to support other KMT candidates with methods other than publicly stumping for them.
Ma and Lien crossed paths for the first time since Lien’s injury yesterday. Shaking Lien’s hand, Ma said, “Thank you. Thank you for publicly supporting us.” Ma Did Not Talk Politics
to Buddhist Leader Ma visited Master Cheng Yen (證嚴法師), founder of the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation (慈濟慈善事業基金會), in New Taipei City for two hours yesterday. According to the spokesperson of Tzu Chi, Ma and the master had only exchanged their opinions and experiences regarding disaster relief and social welfare; nothing political was touched upon.
