License validity period to be extended for foreigners

TAIPEI–Foreign nationals licensed to drive in Taiwan are to be entitled to the same six-year validity period for their driver’s licenses as local drivers, the Ministry of Transport and Communications said yesterday.

Foreign nationals can apply to obtain a driver’s license that will remain valid for six years from the date of issue, according to a new MOTC regulation expected to take effect “shortly.”

At present, such drivers are issued a driver’s license with a validity period the same as their period of stay approved by the government.

Many residents from abroad have decried the practice as inconvenient, as their local driver’s license becomes invalid if their visa expires, which means that they have to re-apply for a new one should they decide to return to Taiwan.
