BRUSSELS–Taipei City Mayor Hau Lung-bin, who arrived in Brussels, Belgium on Sunday, said he would try to talk to every official from the event organizer International University Sports Federation (FISU) to drum up support for Taipei’s bid to host the 2017 Summer Universiade.
“The reason why I have personally come here is to express to every executive our determination to hold the event,” Hau told CNA in an interview. Praising Taipei as a city that loves and enjoys sports, Hau also emphasized its experiences in organizing big international events, such as the 2009 Deaflympics, 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo, and Taipei World Design Expo that ended in October.
“We can definitely make the 2017 Summer Universiade the best of its kind if elected,” he added.
Hau is scheduled to meet all officials from FISU and hopefully lobby as many as he can to support Taipei’s bid on Nov. 29.
At the final stage, Taipei is bidding against Brazil’s capital Brasilia, which Hau described as a “fierce and strong competitor.”
