TAIPEI–Every Taiwanese citizen now shoulders the equivalent of NT$212,000 (US$7,015) of the national debt, up NT$7,000 from the end of November, according to Ministry of Finance (MOF) statistics released yesterday. According to the MOF statistics, the country had long-term debt totaling NT$4.6 trillion and short-term debt worth NT$279.1 billion as of Dec. 31.
The country’s debt statistics show three figures: central government debt that will come to maturity in over a year, total short-term debt and per capita debt. Taiwan has a population of around 23 million. Since December 2010, the ministry has released data on the national debt on the seventh day of each month and has set up a “national debt clock” to remind government agencies to more carefully monitor their spending.
