Six tons of locally grown papayas ship to mainland

TAIPEI — Six metric tons of papayas grown in southern Taiwan left for Shanghai Friday, the first shipment of a targeted 100 tons of papaya exports to China this year.

The Linnei papaya, grown in the township of Linnei in Yunlin County, is famous for its bright red flesh and strong aroma and has been sold to Canada and Japan. It is grown and harvested under a detailed production tracing system.

Legislator Hsu Shu-po of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) said he would continue to promote the export of Yunlin fruit.
