The China Post news staff and agencies–The United States congratulated Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou on Saturday for securing a second four-year term and praised the island as “one of the great success stories in Asia.” “We congratulate Ma Ying-jeou on his re-election and the people of Taiwan on the successful conduct of their presidential and legislative elections,” the White House said in a statement. “Through the hard work of its people and its remarkable economic and political development over the past decades, Taiwan has proven to be one of the great success stories in Asia.” Beijing ‘notices’ Ma’s Re-election: TAO
China has “noticed” that President Ma Ying-jeou was elected to a second term, and expressed hope that cross-strait ties can continue to warm in the future, the Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) under China’s State Council said yesterday. In a statement released last night, the TAO said the result shows that the peaceful development of the cross-strait relations is the “right path” and is widely supported by Taiwanese people. China sincerely hopes that Taiwan’s society can continue to prosper, the TAO said, adding that Beijing wishes that two sides can continue to join hands together based its “objection to Taiwan independence” and on the mutually agreed “1992 Consensus.”
The TAO is an administrative agency responsible for setting and implementing guidelines and policies related to Taiwan.
