TAIPEI–The Canadian government has congratulated Taiwan on the smooth conclusion of its presidential and legislative elections over the weekend, saying it “again demonstrated the strength of Taiwan’s democracy.”
The smooth and orderly way the elections were conducted also demonstrated the overwhelming support of Taiwan’s people for their democratic way of life, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said in a statement issued on election day Jan. 14.
“It is Canada’s hope that improvements in relations between Taiwan and China continue, and that peace and stability are maintained through constructive dialogue,” Baird said.
Meanwhile, a Swiss parliamentary leader congratulated President Ma Ying-jeou on Saturday on his overwhelming re-election victory.
Didier Berberat, president of the Taiwan Friendship Group of Swiss Parliament, also gave credit to the Taiwan people for the calm and peaceful way in which the elections were conducted.
Berberat extended his congratulations to Taiwan immediately upon learning the results of the polls, according to the Taipei Cultural and Economic Delegation in Switzerland.
