TAIPEI–A total of 720,000 Taiwanese shed 1.1 million kilograms of fat, which equals to the weight of 300 adult elephants, in a nationwide weight-loss promotion campaign last year, the Department of Health (DOH) said yesterday. The campaign, launched at the beginning of 2011, called on health officials from Taiwan’s 22 administrative districts to encourage the general public to lose excessive weight in a healthy manner, said Chiou Shu-ti, director-general of the DOH’s Bureau of Health Promotion.
The participants’ Body Mass Index (BMI), a measure of body fat based on height and weight, dropped significantly, Chiou said, and the percentage of participants with an unhealthy BMI dropped from 67 percent when the campaign began to 59.9 percent at the end of the year.
Individuals in the program lost an average of 1.5 kilos of body fat over the duration the year, according to bureau statistics.
Taoyuan County was one of the best performers in the campaign, with 100,000 residents shedding 136,000 kilos of fat.
