A man has been arrested for allegedly torturing a stray pregnant cat in Hsinchu City, police officials said yesterday. The 19-year-old man, surnamed Ho, was nabbed Saturday after police identified him from surveillance camera footage that captured a man in the act of torturing the cat, officials said.

The unemployed Ho, who has a criminal record, did not show any remorse, media reports said. Asked if he would torture more cats in the future, he smiled and replied, “It’s hard to say … I do not regret (hurting the cat).” The man was seen in the video throwing and kicking the cat on the streets of Hsinchu late at night on Dec. 15. The brutality lasted for several minutes until someone passed by. The man fled, and the passers-by sent the seriously wounded cat to the vet. The cat survived but it had a miscarriage. The footage from the surveillance camera was then posted online, sparking an outrage among netizens. The man said he was not afraid that the netizens would come after him. Police referred Ho to prosecutors on alleged violation of the animal protection law.
