Long break sparks busy domestic travel over CNY

TAIPEI–The number of people who traveled domestically during the recently ended Lunar New Year hit around 11 million thanks to the longer-than-usual holiday period, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) said yesterday.

With the holiday spanning from Jan. 21 to 29, the volume of domestic travel showed an increase of 29 percent compared with last year, generating an output value of more than NT$10 billion (US$336 million), said MOTC Minister Mao Chi-kuo. The most popular travel destinations during the Lunar New Year were national scenic areas including the northeast coast, the East Rift Valley National Scenic Area and central Taiwan’s Sun Moon Lake, where tourist numbers accounted for half of the total number recorded island-wide during the holiday period.

Referring to his personal experience at the Alishan National Scenic Area during the holiday, Mao said vendors selling Aiyu jelly desserts had to use washing machines rather than their hands to extract the gel from the Aiyu seeds to meet the overwhelming demand.
