Flu epidemic slows down after holiday peak: CDC

TAIPEI–The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday that the current flu outbreak has slowed down in the wake of a peak over the Lunar New Year holiday, but advised the public to remain cautious.

Based on CDC statistics, the biggest number of patients who sought medical help for flu-related illness in a single day during the Jan. 21-29 holiday was on Jan. 24, with 34,000 cases in total, 10,000 of whom developed flu-like symptoms.

However, the daily number of cases developing flu-like symptoms had dropped to 2,400 as of a day earlier.

“This is the first pronounced decrease in the current outbreak,” said Chou Jih-haw, deputy director-general of the CDC.
