Minister resigns over drunken remarks

TAIPEI–President Ma Ying-jeou approved the resignation of Examination Minister (考選部長) Lai Feng-wei (賴峰偉) yesterday to stem controversy caused by indecent remarks Lai made last month.

Lai offered to resign after local media reported that Lai got drunk and used sexually suggestive language at the ministry’s year-end party. Lai later apologized for his alleged misconduct, promising he would cut down on alcohol and social outings. Ma approved Lai’s resignation, out of respect for his decision, the Presidential Office said. Under the Constitution, the president is entitled to name and dismiss the examination minister, the Presidential Office said.
