‘Linsanity’ spurs sports lottery sales in Taiwan

TAIPEI–The NBA’s latest phenomenon Jeremy Lin has not only been the top story for Taiwan’s local newspapers and news broadcasters, but he has also boosted Taiwan’s sports lottery sales, the lottery company said.

The New York Knicks point guard has led the team on a seven-game winning streak since Feb. 4, which has helped to increase lottery sales by 50 percent, the Taiwan Sports Lottery (TSL) said in a statement.

Lottery sales for the matches featuring the first American-born NBA player of Taiwanese descent went “Linsane,” with total sales of NT$54 million (US$1.83 million) being recorded over the seven previous games, the TSL said.

Lin’s sudden spurt of form has heated up Taiwanese fans’ willingness to place a bet, said TSL General Manager Hung Ju-min.
