Taipei mayor in Barcelona to learn event planning tips

TAIPEI–Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin was in Barcelona Friday on the latest stop of his 10-day European fact-finding trip to meet with Mayor Xavier Trias and learn about how the Spanish city handles large-scale events.

Hau said he hoped the two cities could strengthen cooperation in the future since they have a similar vision — building a clean, traffic-efficient city with citywide Wi-Fi access.

Barcelona went through a transformation after holding the 1992 Olympics, Trias told Hau, and despite many European cities seeing their economies falter under the weight of the European debt crisis, Barcelona has been barely affected by the financial turmoil, the mayor added.

Trias also said that the Mobile World Congress, which just ended in Barcelona, drew 67,000 visitors, an indication of the city’s attractiveness to investors.
