Friendship groups to give boost to global diplomacy

TAIPEI–The Legislative Yuan has organized three friendship groups to promote relations with France and Russia, as well as with nondiplomatic allies in Latin America.

“Through congressional diplomacy, Taiwan will be able to boost its ties with those countries,” Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng said Friday at a ceremony to mark the formation of a congressional friendship association between the Republic of China and Central and South American countries, another between the R.O.C. and France and a third between the R.O.C. and Russia.

The friendship groups were initiated by ruling Kuomintang Legislator Pan Wei-kang. Wang will serve as honorary chairman of all three associations.

Wang thanked Pan for her enthusiasm in organizing the friendship groups and he urged the relevant authorities to assist them when they try to strengthen Taiwan’s foreign relations through congressional diplomacy.
