The China Post news staff–The global sales of tablet PCs are expected to hit a high of 118.9 million units this year, for a whopping growth of 98 percent from the sales volume of around 60 million units registered last year, according to an estimate released by Gartner Inc., a U.S.-based information technology research and advisory company. Although tablets installed with Microsoft operating systems are already available on the market, Apple’s iSO tablets are expected to maintain a dominant share — at 61.4 percent — of the global tablet market this year, Gartner estimated.

Few makers of the non-Apple camp unveiled new tablet models at either the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show held Jan. 10-13 in the U.S. or the 2012 Mobile World Congress held in Spain in early March, as most makers would rather wait to see what new models Apple will unveil this year.

On another front, many tablet makers plan to launch new models with dual operating systems after Microsoft launches its Windows 8 operating system, hoping to boost their shares of the commercial and consumer tablet markets.

Gartner estimated Microsoft’s tablets to account for 4.18 percent of the global market this year, and forecasts the rate to surge to 11.8 percent in 2016.

Meanwhile, Android media tablets are expected to command 31.9 percent of the global market for tablets this year.
