Railway fare hike is not likely this year: minister

TAIPEI–There will be no increase in railway fares this year despite the government’s recent decision to raise fuel prices and electricity rates, Transportation Minister Mao Chi-kuo said yesterday.

“I do not think either Taiwan Railways Administration or Taiwan High Speed Rail Co. is planning to raise ticket prices,” Mao said at a legislative session.

He said supplementary measures have been devised to help bus, taxi and ferry operators meet the higher cost of fuel.

As to whether domestic airfares will rise, Mao said the relevant authorities have been looking at the issue and will make a decision around August.
