MANILA–Police in the Philippines have busted a Taiwanese-led telephone fraud ring that was based in the south of the country, capturing 72 Taiwanese and six Chinese suspects.
Following a tip-off from Taiwanese police, Philippine police made the arrests in raids on three locations in the southern city of Davao Wednesday.
An initial investigation indicates that the ring members posed as prosecutors, government officials or customer service agents to swindle money out of their victims, who were mostly in China.
Most of the members are aged between 20 and 30, with the lead suspects identified as two Taiwanese nationals surnamed Lu and Huang, respectively.
The suspects will be repatriated back to Taiwan and China accordingly, the police said.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese officials posted in the Philippines said Taiwanese police also arrested several members of the same ring in Taiwan that same day as part of a cross-border police cooperation program.
